Beginning July 1, 2026, California Senate Bill 848 expands annual child safety requirements for school volunteers. Volunteers who are 18 years of age or older must complete additional child safety requirements before volunteering.
To become a volunteer for the 2026-27 school year, you will need to adhere to the Tuberculosis (TB) screening, annual Child Abuse Prevention Training, and fingerprinting requirements. Please see below for detailed information.
Note: Returning volunteers who had a volunteer clearance status as of the 2025-26 school year will also need to complete these updated requirements and submit a Volunteer Verification Form found in the steps listed further below.
Step 1: Complete Volunteer Verification form below. You will need to upload your tuberculosis (TB) test results, a risk assessment signed by a medical professional or official documentation from your medical provider indicating you are tuberculosis free.
Step 2: If you indicate you already have fingerprints on file (including as a previous/current volunteer or employee in our district), your application will be reviewed by an analyst. If found on file, you will receive communication. Following step 2, you will also receive a link to the annual online Child Abuse Prevention Training.
Step 3: If your fingerprints/background review are not on file, instructions on how to complete the process, along with the required form for LiveScan, will be sent via an email entitled "Authorized for Background Review." You will also receive the link to register for the annual online mandated Child Abuse Prevention Training.
Step 4: If a background review is needed, you will schedule a fingerprinting appointment at www.sanjuan.edu/fingerprint. The Volunteer Verification form must be completed first, as it is required to link your fingerprint results. Volunteer fingerprinting is currently offered at no cost. Appointments are available between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A valid photo ID is required. Evening walk-in clinics are available during the school year and can be found on the volunteer calendar.
Step 5: The Volunteer team will confirm completion of the annual Child Abuse Prevention Training. Once you begin the online training, you will have 30 days to complete it. Completion of this training is required before volunteer service can begin.
Step 6: Your application will be reviewed in it's entirety to ensure all requirements have been completed. Once completed, you and your primary school site will receive notification of your volunteer status.
Final Step: Volunteer! Congratulations and thank you for volunteering with us! Please connect with your school site for volunteer opportunities throughout the school year.
